"According to pop-culture pundit Pete Hammond, Jim Sheridan, the director of the movie Brothers which is due in theaters December 4, 2009:...received a tremendous ovation Sunday afternoon when he was introduced for a Q&A after a very well-received Directors Guild of America screening. The free-wheeling director engaged in a refreshingly honest and thoughtful conversation about the film's bumpy journey to being remade.
The original upon which Brothers is based is the 2004 Danish film Brødre written by Susanne Bier and Anders Thomas Jensen which was directed by Bier. Brødre tells the story of a heroic older brother who serves in Afghanistan, his polar opposite younger brother and the woman who loves them both. Whereas Brødre was shot in Copenhagen with Spain standing in for Afghanistan, the bulk of Brothers was shot in New Mexico.
A six-time Academy Award nominee, Sheridan is best known for his work directing In America and In the Name of the Father. Brothers has a first-rate cast, as well: Toby Maguire as the soldier, Jake Gyllenhaal as his sibling and Natalie Portman as the wife and sister-in-law.

Oscar chances for "Brothers" and other films
ASPEN — Daniel Day-Lewis, Nicole Kidman and Jake Gyllenhaal will be making appearances — on-screen — in Aspen over the holidays.
"Aspen Film has announced a preview of the program for the 19th annual Academy Screenings series, and among the films are the musical “Nine” starring Day-Lewis and Kidman; and “Brothers” starring Gyllenhaal.
The 2009 Academy Screenings, running Dec. 23-Jan. 2 at Harris Hall, presents 19 films considered candidates for Academy Awards. The full schedule will be announced on Dec. 2, with tickets on sale starting Dec. 14".

"Brothers”
Verdict: The rapturous reception at early screenings gave director Jim Sheridan’s film some genuine awards heat and prompted Lionsgate to launch an Oscar campaign. But “Brothers,” a remake of Danish director Susanne Bier’s 2005 original, is not a film that should be burdened with hype or high expectations; it’s an uneven, sometimes melodramatic, occasionally effective look at the way war leaves as much carnage on the home front as on the battlefield. Despite impressive moments of frayed-nerve intensity, there’s precious little subtlety here, and way too many clichés..jpg)
Natalie Portman is steady as the wife left behind when her soldier husband goes missing and is presumed dead, but Tobey Maguire’s haunted, wild-eyed returning soldier is over-the-top. For my money, the strongest (and subtlest) performance comes from Jake Gyllenhaal as the ex-con who finds a quiet redemption of sorts in his brother’s absence.
Oscar chances: Guild audiences have reportedly been welcoming, but early reviews are mixed and I’d be surprised if the film gets much traction in the awards race. Maguire and Gyllenhaal may have outside shots at nominations, though the strongest shot might rest with U2’s closing-credits song, “Winter,” which could probably use more of a hook and a chorus to survive the music branch’s nominating process.
“The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus”
Verdict: Stylish, fun, as imaginative as you’d expect, but also something of a mess. It’s admirable that Terry Gilliam found an intriguing way to finish the film after the death of Heath Ledger, and the three actors who take over parts of Ledger’s role – Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Colin Farrell – all acquit themselves honorably, though it’s undeniably frustrating that the big, climactic emotional scenes all come when Farrell’s playing the part instead of Ledger. But while I loved the look and feel and mood of the movie, it just didn’t have the heart or the magic of the two previous Gilliam/Charles McKeown collaborations, “Brazil” and “The Adventures of Baron Munchausen.”

Oscar hopes: Art direction and costumes are a possibility if the movie manages to establish a presence in the minds of voters. Beyond that, there’s probably not much chance. Ledger’s role is flashy but feels too truncated for a second posthumous nod, unless voters really, really loved giving him the Oscar last year and are determined to do it again. New Moon actors talk about Eclipse
With the "Twilight" sequel nabbing the advance-sales record, the biggest single-day record and the highest-grossing midnight showings of all time, fans have to wonder: Can this franchise get any bigger? Fortunately, they only have to wait seven months to get the answer. Many of the saga's stars have cited "Eclipse" as their favorite of Stephenie Meyer's novels, and with "30 Days of Night" filmmaker David Slade at the helm, it seems likely to be a very distinctive entry into the blockbuster series.

'New Moon' Style Guide To The Costumes of Edward & Bella:
"During a interesting (to say the least!) double “date” with Mike (Michael Welch, left) and Jacob (Taylor Lautner, right) Bella wore the “Signe Smocked top” by Joie and American Eagle jeans. But the most notable part of her outfit is her token accessories — the turquoise bracelet and moonstone ring, which, according to Tish, were the very same trinkets Kristen wore in “Twilight.”
One Bella takes a leap of faith (a.k.a. a cliff dive) she puts on Jacob’s big shearling jacket. The costumer found that coat, which was manufactured by Split, in old stock from the “Twilight” wardrobe closet.
DASHING EDWARD“This is the most important costume [for Edward] because it’s the last thing Bella remembers him in,” the costumer said of Robert Pattinson’s suit. “We had to be very careful about choosing something that was absolutely right because he has to spend almost the whole film in it.” So, instead of buying one, Tish created her own suit out of a grey tweed with blue and orange flecks in it. “I wanted old world fabric to match with his heritage. I also wanted something that had texture and that would be able to age.”
Kristen is wearing a custom made jacket that was replicated from the one she wore in “Twilight.”
THE GREEN MILE“Putting Bella in hunter green was a request from Chris [Weitz],” Tish said of Kristen’s button up shirt, which was a design from Boy by Band of Outsiders paired with J Brand jeans and Keds. “We knew that Bella was going to be running through a crowd who were all going to be in red, so we had to choose a color that would make her stand out and still transition easily to that forest scene at the beginning of the film.”
ROBED AND DANGEROUSIf you're wondering where the black shirt went that Robert was slowly unbuttoning to reveal his six-pack vampire self to the crowd in Italy (in the movie, we see him put on a red robe after his attempts are thwarted by Bella, but, uh, did he just dump his acutal shirt on the ground?), it's in the black hole pf movie making. "When the script was originally set, Edward was supposed to be captured outside by Demetri and Felix — that’s why he is thrown a red robe," Tish explains. "[But], by the time they decided he was instead going to be captured inside, we had already filmed the inside scenes."
THE ENCHANTED FOREST“These were the first costumes that I designed,” Tish recalls of the sequence in which we see future Bella as a vampire running with Edward in the woods. “The fantasy was this sort of post-wedding feeling where they were hunting in these light-colored outfits through the dark forest. I didn’t want them in anything practical.” So, she put Robert in some pretty high-end threads: a vest from Loden Dager, a Club Monaco linen shirt, Orme in Portofino khakis and Magnanni shoes (the same ones he wears with the grey suit throughout the movie). For Bella, Tish aimed for sweet and girly, while Chris Weitz envisioned a look from Greek mythology: Diana the Huntress. The result? “We made that silk chiffon over silk organza dress.
