An Uncle and A Housewife

"Brokeback Mountain star Jake Gyllenhaal desperately wanted to prove he was a good uncle to new niece Ramona, but became overwhelmed when he attempted to change her diaper. The star's sister Maggie gave birth to a daughter in October (2006) and he wanted to get the full experience of trying to care for her.He explains, "I'm an uncle. It's great. It's amazing - except for the diaper changing, which I did once and will never go back to again until it is my own child."I wanted to try it out. I wanted to see what it was like. So she handed me my niece and I put her down on the changing table and I un-knotted her organic diaper."I (was gagging) and handed her back!"

"Gwyneth Paltrow, who has been on a bit of a self-imposed career hiatus since becoming a wife and mother, says she's excited to get back to work – but calls the last three years the best of her life.

The Shakespeare in Love Oscar winner, who most recently starred in "Running with Scissors", said, however, that her other job has been just as fulfilling as acting.
"I've been at home being a housewife, which is amazing and I've loved every second of it," she told Winfrey's pal Gayle King backstage at the Academy Awards. She also called being wife (to Coldplay singer Chris Martin) and mother (to Apple, 2, and Moses, 10 months) "definitely the hardest job."

Up next for Paltrow: "Dirty Tricks", which is scheduled to come out next year and costars her former boyfriend, Brad Pitt, and Iron Man with Robert Downey Jr. and Terrence Howard."

Creeped out by gay scenes

"Mark Wahlberg and Joaquin Phoenix were offered the Brokeback Mountain roles eventually portrayed by Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal. Wahlberg admits he was relieved not to get the part because he was uncomfortable with the sex scenes. "I met with Ang Lee on that movie, I read 15 pages of the script and got a little creeped out," the Departed actor said. "It was very graphic, descriptive - the spitting on the hand, getting ready to do the thing. I told Ang Lee, 'I like you, you're a talented guy, if you want to talk about it more...' Thankfully, he didn't." The former underwear model hasn't actually seen the finished film, and says, "I didn't rush to see Brokeback, it's just not my deal... Obviously, it was done in taste - look how it was received."

Emmy at "Zodiac" premiere

Many "Jake Watch" readers knew of my secret passion for Emmy Rossum, in Anneka's review I had to reveal my crush. Here's a (moderate) dose of Emmy's beauty to delight us:

Liebe & Humor

Jake in an interview for the German "Madchen" magazine said he looked for a girl who can laugh with. "Ich brauche Liebe and Humor" ("I need Love and Humour") is the headline of this article.

SFPD not thrilled

"When “Zodiac” hits theaters early next month, its arrival will be greeted with a new round of media coverage — the media being the fuel for why the case has received publicity well beyond its due. And our local police will greet the news with as about as much enthusiasm as being stuck in the middle of a riot.

“I hate that case,” said San Francisco police Capt. John Hennessey, who was the head of homicide investigations when the case was put on ice. “It just sucks the oxygen out of everything around it.” So why are the embers still burning on a story so old it creaks with middle age? Because the Zodiac was the one who got away — and was as much a genius of self-promotion as he was a cold-blooded killer.

His first confirmed killing was five days before Christmas in 1968, when he shot and killed two teenagers along a remote road in Vallejo. He killed two other people before his last homicide, the execution-style murder of San Francisco cabdriver Paul Stine in Presidio Heights.

The Stine slaying was the only killing linked to the Zodiac in San Francisco, yet he is inevitably tied to The City because of the bright lights placed on the letters he sent to The Examiner and mostly the Chronicle, that received front-page placement.

The person most people identified as the potential killer died in 1992.

My own theory on why the Zodiac case has received so much attention is that it has been caught up in a vortex of other killings during a particularly violent and bloody period in Bay Area history.

Up until a few years ago, police were getting calls on the Zodiac on almost a daily basis, but it took so much time and attention away from ongoing homicide cases that they put it on the inactive list until the day they get a lead that might actually go somewhere.

But they were definitely hoping it wouldn’t go to Hollywood, backed by a marketing campaign. It’s a legend in the (movie-) making." -by Ken Garcia.
