This British movie stars Carey Mulligan in what’s said to be a star-making role, and also features Peter Sarsgaard, Alfred Molina, and Emma Thompson. The screenplay is by acclaimed novelist Nick Hornby.
But…while critics will champion it, it might not be “big” enough for anyone else to care. Weak title, too. (October 16)

Jake Gyllenhaal with Natalie Portman in "Brothers" (2009).
5. Brothers
This super-heavy movie stars Tobey Maguire as a soldier presumed dead, and Jake Gyllenhaal and Natalie Portman as the soldier’s brother and wife, who start getting busy until it turns out Maguire is still alive. Directed by In America’s Jim Sheridan.
But…how heavy is too heavy? The trailer kind of made the movie seem as uncomfortable as a stomach pumping. (December 4).
4. Precious
Every year there’s an indie movie — Little Miss Sunshine, Juno, Slumdog Millionaire. This year, it’s Precious — the story of an overweight pregnant Harlem teenager with an abusive mother. Even though the subject seems overwhelmingly bleak, audiences at Sundance and Toronto loved it. (November 6)
But…are Academy members really ready to give Mo’Nique (who plays the abusive mother) a Best Supporting Actress nomination?
3. Amelia
A biopic of Amelia Earhart, featuring Hilary Swank, Richard Gere, and Ewan McGregor. Directed by Vanity Fair’s Mira Nair.
But…reviews will be crucial. Then again, it’s a biopic starring Hilary Swank, it’ll have to work hard not to be nominated for anything. (October 23)
2. Nine
A musical based on the stage musical, which itself was based on Fredrico Fellini’s 8 1/2, about a womanizing film director going through a mid-life crisis. Somehow they got Daniel Day-Lewis to star in it, along with Judi Dench, Sophia Loren, Penelope Cruz, Marion Cotillard, Kate Hudson, and Nicole Kidman. It’s directed by Chicago’s Rob Marshall. I would tell you how many Oscar nominations all those people have between them, but I can’t count that high.
But…Marshall’s Memoirs of a Geisha also sounded like an Oscar lock, and it didn’t happen. (November 25)
1. Invictus
A Clint Eastwood-directed film about a period in the life of Nelson Mandela, starring Morgan Freeman as Mandela and co-starring Matt Damon. Read that sentence again. You don’t even have to see it; just start handing it some Oscars".
