From 'Love and other drugs' to 'Source Code'

"Essentially, the film boils down to the question of how an amoral, manipulative man such as Jamie will react to the reality of his girlfriend's illness; and if this sounds like a grim subject for a movie, it doesn't play that way, thanks to the skills of the actors involved and the wit imbued in the screenplay (by Charles Randolph, Marshall Herskovitz and the director). In other hands, the film could easily have fallen into the trap of the "glamorous illness" genre that was most famously represented by Love Story in 1970. Love & Other Drugs manages to avoid most of the cliches inherent in this kind of movie. True, the film pulls its punches in the end, sugar-coating what, in reality, would seem to be a pretty bitter pill; but by that time it has explored, with seeming fearlessness, all sorts of important issues". "Jake Gyllenhaal wants to write his own films. The 'Love & Other Drugs' star is concerned his acting career won't always be successful but already has a back-up plan prepared for when he gets older. He said: "You're always wondering how long this will last. It's a piece of being an actor. There's always someone more talented or younger than you."But I also like to write. In years to come, I think that will expand. I won't just be scrapping for the next job. Maybe I'll create something for myself."

Perhaps Jake could consider penning his own comedy after admitting he accepted the role as a Viagra salesman who falls in love with a Parkinson's disease sufferer - played by Anne Hathaway -in 'Love and Other Drugs' because he was so tired of a lack of films that combined laughter and emotion.
He told Britain's Glamour magazine: "I'm tired of comedies that make you laugh but you don't buy the emotional side. "The film has a sense of comedy, but also a sense of something deeper, about the difficulties of being alive." Source: www.contactmusic.com

Jake Gyllenhaal out for a drive with Taylor Swift in Beverly Hills

Jake Gyllenhaal and Taylor Swift out for a drive with Taylor Swift in Beverly Hills on 9th December 2010. Pictures courtesy of Iheartjakemedia.com

Just moments ago, Jake Gyllenhaal and Taylor Swift were cruising around Beverly Hills when they decided the heat from the paparazzi was getting a little too hot so Jake put in a call to the police. And not only did the LAPD send out ground support but they also dispatched a HELICOPTER to watch over the two superstars in their Audi Q7.

Our photographer on the scene tells us Jake was TOTALLY overreacting:

"I don't know why Jake was in such a bad mood. We saw him and Taylor in the car and when we tried to see where they would park to get out, Jake went crazy. It's like he didn't want anyone to get a shot of him and Taylor together. I mean if he's going to do set-up shots with the paps like he did last week, what's the difference?!"
We've put in the call to the Beverly Hills Police Department, the BH Sheriff's Department and the main headquarters of the LAPD and so far no response from anyone as to why they felt it was necessary to send a helicopter to "protect" a celebrity from photographers. (Not such a great use of taxpayer's money, I'd say!) Source: x17online.com

Gossip Cop is told it was a far more serious situation.
“This was not about a celebrity saying, ‘Don’t follow me”, says our insider, adding that Gyllenhaal and Swift “felt they were in jeopardy.”

But it wasn’t just Swift’s safety and his own that Gyllenhaal was concerned about. “There were people on the sidewalk, families” in the neighborhood, we’re told, who could have potentially been injured.

“It was really dangerous”, reiterates our source, who says the police stopped six paparazzi cars that were right on Gyllenhaal’s car. Source: www.gossipcop.com

Love and other drugs: Jake Gyllenhaal, a suave casanova who falls in love

Anne Hathaway and Jake Gyllenhaal attending Love & Other Drugs premiere in Sydney on 6th December 2010

"It's extraordinary — sick, a little bit, but extraordinary to see, in the world of selling, where that gets you," Gyllenhaal says. It wasn't his world — he comes from a family so scrupulous that his bar mitzvah was held in a homeless shelter so that he would appreciate his own good fortune — but he has an actor's eye for its peculiar energy.
"Jamie is such a storyteller and has such a rhythm that became a huge part of who this guy was," Gyllenhaal says.
"She was kind of this shell of what she is now, the quirky girl who comes in and takes control," Gyllenhaal says. "When Annie came on board, she said, 'This needs to be a love story; it needs to be two people being changed by each other as opposed to this guy's journey'.
And I agreed. That is our relationship, I think. You'll find actors vying for attention and I don't think she and I really do." "It did help that we had been sort of naked together in Brokeback Moun-tain," Gyllenhaal says. "So we had been cinematically devirginised to each other."
They also were able to agree with the director, Edward Zwick, that nothing they shot would be under contract — "you know, where you can only see this part of his butt and her breast for so many seconds" — and that, in return, they could veto any shot that made them uncomfortable. "In terms of getting intimate, I didn't think about it," Gyllenhaal says. "I mean, I really didn't. And I don't. The thought that was on our minds was telling a good love story."
Gyllenhaal is 30 years old next week. He feels at a point of transition. "I don't know if it's to do with turning 30 but I do feel like there's a big sea change with who I am and what I want to do, what I care about," he says. "I do feel that."
In one respect, at least, he feels something in common with his character — a kind of tranquillity. "When I was younger I always wanted to be ahead of where I was," he says. "Whereas now I feel that this is where I am. And I feel good about that." You can't get cooler than that". Source: www.smh.com.au

"Gyllenhaal was able to provide a very dynamic performance, demonstrating a significant change in a suave Casanova looking for a fun time, to a man in love who wants to be with his beloved, regardless of any obstacles. Also, despite the awkwardness of the storyline and the unnecessary overkill of nudity, Love and Other Drugs may still be Hathaway's career-best; she plays Maggie Murdock impeccably, making sure to appropriately portray and not force the emotions of her character. The issues dealt with in Love and Other Drugs are very much adult and not in the least bit relatable to a teenager who faces only the trivial matters of everyday life. For instance, it is unfathomable to believe that the average teenager would consider using sexual favors to push a product in order to meet company selling quotas, as Randall faithfully demonstrated within the first few moments of the film.
Love and Other Drugs leaves the American public uncomfortable with many scenes, as it not only deals with the more mature themes, but it also incorporates a sex scene into the film about every 20 minutes or so, making the movie very similar in nature to European cinema".
