"Shutter Island" Spoiler Warning by Dennis Lehane

Leonardo DiCaprio as Teddy Daniels/Andrew Laeddis in "Shutter Island" (2010).

Martin Scorsese's latest has a whopper of a conclusion. It's almost a note-perfect adaptation of Dennis Lehane's book. "Almost" because there's one comment made at the end which throws the entire house of cards constructed by the author into question. Lehane already told us that he stays out of the writing process once an agreement has been made to adapt one of his books.SPOILER WARNING: "Shutter Island" concludes with the revelation that Leonardo DiCaprio's U.S. Marshal Teddy Daniels is in fact an alternate persona constructed by former U.S. Marshal and current Shutter Island inmate Andrew Laeddis. The entire investigation that unfolds over the course of the story was in fact an elaborate ruse designed to rattle Laeddis so much that he puts his Daniels persona to rest.In this book, there's no question about how the ending plays out. Laeddis, seemingly on the road to recovery after his shocking ordeal, goes to sleep. He wakes up and meets with his doctor, who had been playing the role of his partner for the "case," outside the main facility. As the two sit there, it becomes clear that Laeddis has once again lapsed into his Daniels persona, essentially sentencing himself to a lobotomy. The film is more ambiguous. Things play out similarly, but as Laeddis/Daniels sits and has a smoke with his doctor/partner, he asks the question "Would you rather live as a monster or die as a hero?" This raises the possibility that his relapse is in fact intentional, that Laeddis is so tired of being sick, he longs for the blissful ignorance that a lobotomy will bring. We asked Lehane for his thoughts on the altered ending in an interview last week. "I would say that line, which comes across as a question, he asks it sort of rhetorically," he explained. "Personally, I think he has a momentary flash. To me that's all it is. It's just one moment of sanity mixed in the midst of all the other delusions.""When he asks the question, he does it in such a way that, if he were to say it as a statement... then there's no solution here but to stop the lobotomy. Because if he shows any sort of self-awareness, then it's over, they wouldn't want to lobotomize him. My feeling was no, he's not so conscious he says 'Oh I'm going to decide to pretend to be Laeddis so they'll finally give me a lobotomy.' That would just be far more suicidal than I think this character is. I think that in one moment, for a half a second sitting there in that island he remembered who he was and then he asks that question and he quickly sort of lets it go. That was my feeling on that line."
That's about as detailed an explanation as a fan could hope for. It's also a sensible read, even if you don't agree with the decision to make the change. Lehane was and is okay with it though.
Leonardo DiCaprio and Michelle Williams as Teddy and Dolores in "Shutter Island".
"I liked that line when I read the script," he said. "There was just some debate as to how much of a question it is and how much of a declarative statement. In the end they went with it being a question, which I think is important."

Robert Pattinson praises Kristen Stewart's new films

Robert Pattinson on The Daily Show 9:56 am / Mar 3rd, 2010

Pattinson has been reciprocating that support and praise for Kristen's new films. "I saw a really early cut of 'The Runaways,' " he told MTV News on Monday. "It was really good. And 'Welcome to the Rileys' is really good too. But I saw both things at really early cuts, so I don't know really what they're like now. But 'Welcome to the Rileys' is amazing."

Both "Runaways" and "Rileys" premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January to wide acclaim. Assessing Stewart's turn as a teen prostitute in "Rileys," an MTV review declared, "You cannot walk away from a viewing and say the actress doesn't fearlessly expose herself physically and emotionally, and doesn't do so with astonishing maturity and believability."

Eddie Redmayne says "Kristen is magnetic" in The Yellow Handkerchief

SFBG: Going back to The Yellow Handkerchief, I wanted to ask for your opinion on why this unlikely trio forms. Obviously there’s some attraction on Gordy’s part when it comes to [Kristen Stewart's character] Martine, but what else is there that links them together?

Kristen Stewart plays Martine in "The Yellow Handkerchief".

ER: For me, the film is about chance, really. It’s about chance and circumstance. And what I love is, it hopefully feels like this is a story going on in the world that the camera stumbles across, travels with, and then lets go. It’s really about the truth of those moments in life that it is through moments of luck or passing or who you bump into on the street or whether, specifically in Yellow Handkerchief, a rain storm causes these people to end up in a car together for three days. It’s as simple a conceit as that. But I think it plays truthfully in its idiosyncrasies almost.
SFBG: Can you talk about developing chemistry with your co-stars, William Hurt and Kristen Stewart? How did you form that bond, both on-screen and off?
Eddie Redmayne and Kristen Stewart.

ER: Well, what was wonderful is, Kristen is magnetic and an incredibly wonderful person, very open and lovely, and we got on very well form the outset. William is someone I’ve admired for a long time and have worked with on The Good Shepherd, although I’d never acted with him. What was great is, firstly, we had two weeks rehearsal, which is rare on film and something that William insists on. So we got to know each other. But also, three of us sat in a car in the incredible heat in Louisiana, passing through these extraordinary landscapes. It’s a way to bond quite promptly, and so the chemistry built really through spending an intense, really quite intimate time together".

Joseph Gordon-Levitt replaces James McAvoy

"James McAvoy signed on to star in the formerly titled "I'm With Cancer", a comedy co-starring Seth Rogen about a 25-year-old battling cancer. MTV News has exclusively learned that McAvoy has dropped out of the film after shooting began and that he has been replaced with Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Arthur in "Inception" (2010).

A source close to the production tells us that McAvoy dropped out this week for personal reasons and that producers have locked Gordon-Levitt to step into the role.
Rogen said in a statement: "It’s incredibly unfortunate that circumstances outside of everyone’s control have taken James away from the project, but, with James’s blessing, we were able to have Joseph step in to take on the [lead] role of Adam. We all look forward to working with James in the future."
McAvoy's role as the cancer-stricken twentysomething had been touted as the actor's first high-profile one following the success of 2008's "Wanted." The film is based on the true experiences of screenwriter Will Reiser, who successfully waged his own battle with cancer in his 20s. Rogen is producing with his writing partner Evan Goldberg. The movie co-stars Anna Kendrick and Bryce Dallas Howard.

"'I'm with Cancer' is a very personal story, about what happened to our friend for the most part," Rogen told MTV News last summer.

"So we didn’t really need much added insight into that. I was there with [Reiser] as he experienced a lot of it."

Robert got closer to Kristen in "Remember Me" premiere

Robert Pattinson at the premiere for new romance drama Remember Me opposite Lost star Emilie de Ravin

"While on the red carpet for his new movie, “Remember Me” Rob told Life & Style, “It’s nice”, when asked, “How do you feel about your girlfriend Kristen being here to support you?”
“Inside the theater, Rob rushed to sit down next to Kristen, who had been seated already. Kristen immediately asked him, ‘How was it?’—referring to his red carpet entrance and interviews. He shrugged and smiled.”

The two continued their affection as the night went on. “As the lights went down Kristen clapped along with the crowd. She leaned over to Rob and nuzzled her head into his neck. He leaned his head into hers. They looked quietly affectionate and at ease with one.

During various scenes in the movie, Rob gave Kristen a nudge shoulder to shoulder. It was a cute gesture, perhaps to show her how into her he is.”

“Throughout the movie, they each took sips from the same water bottle and they nuzzled into each other’s necks as they whispered and cuddled. It looked like they were kissing each other’s necks at different points in the movie—about six times. They definitely looked like a cute couple sharing quiet moments together.”

New ‘Remember Me’ TV Spot – “Moments”

"Robert was joined by actress Emilie de Ravin, as they both star in the upcoming romantic drama Remember Me. Robert called the film -- in which his character, a rebellious young man, finds a spark with a quirky girl played by Emilie -- reminiscent of '70s and '80s films like Ordinary People and Terms of Endearment, saying they don't make movies like that anymore.

Barbara compared Robert to James Dean, though James Dean probably didn't have to answer questions about a Details interview where he said "something about vaginas" (that would be his quote that he's "allergic to vaginas"). Robert explained that the lesson he learned was "never try to make jokes in interviews." That, or "never do interviews."
