"Brothers" stills, reviews + behind the scenes

"Gyllenhaal admits that he was very challenged by the script (“Brothers” is a remake of the Danish language film “Brodre,” this time directed by an Irishman).“Just coming from Ireland it was interesting how Jim thought my character would act compared to my own American take,” Gyllenhaal says. “There’s a moment in the film when Natalie’s character tells mine that my brother is dead, and Jim suggested I fall on the ground and make snow angels. I said to him very quietly I don’t know if an American would react like that.”For Maguire, the decision to get involved in “Brothers” was down to the strength of the script and the talent involved.

“I wanted to do a film that shines a light on a subject that we don’t really talk enough about,” he says.
“My character is all buttoned up and quiet about his war experiences. I think he doesn’t relate that well to his wife and children, and I think he’s living a facsimile of a life. He’s much more at home with his military family and much more comfortable at war. And it’s killing him.” Source: www.irishcentral.com

"It's there in one early scene, as the Cahill family sits down to a tense dinner. One brother — Gyllenhaal's Tommy — is just out of prison (and we don't find out for a long time why he was there). The other — Maguire's Sam, a Marine captain — is off to Afghanistan again, and eager for it. Once there, he ponders how it "almost feels like home." Portman, as Sam's wife Grace, is the anchor who keeps the family in place: her small daughters, Isabelle (Bailee Madison) and Maggie (Taylor Geare); her father-in-law Hank (Sam Shepard), an ex-Marine himself; and her mother-in-law Elsie (Mare Winningham). Behind the scenes of "Brothers" video

Jake or Tobey, who's the best deal?

With whom of these two gentlemen would you prefer to go out/sleep? Jake Gyllenhaal or Tobey Maguire? Were the kissing scenes with Jake the best for Natalie Portman in "Brothers? Jake thought so!

"Natalie Portman is faced with a tough choice -- Jake Gyllenhaal or Tobey Maguire? Maguire plays her husband, a soldier who is believed killed in the war in the Middle East, and Gyllenhaal plays Maguire's brother, who comforts his sibling's wife and daughters. Gyllenhaal and Portman fall in love -- naturally, because, look at them -- but when Maguire is discovered alive, he returns home and finds that his family has moved on without him. Portman has kids with Maguire, and Maguire may have a little bit of post-traumatic something-something going on, which makes the decision a lot more complicated than a simple one-or-the-other choice, but seeing the two in romantic competition with each other got us thinking: Who would we choose, given the choice between all of the characters each actor has played? We paired up logical competitors from Tobey's and Jake's resumes and called out their pros and cons for a romantic, cinematic battle for the ages.
Peter Parker (Spider-Man) vs. Sam Hall (The Day After Tomorrow)
Peter: Spins a web any size; constantly late to the theater.
Sam: Outraces cold weather; lives in frozen library.
Winner: Peter! (Though if Gyllenhaal had taken over for Maguire in this role, like it was speculated, it would have been a tie, or much more complicated.)
David (Pleasantville) vs. Donnie Darko (Donnie Darko)
David: Can travel into old television shows, interested in art: watches a lot of television shows.
Darko: Can travel through time and space, interested in philosophy; may be a sociopath.
Winner: David!
Homer Wells (The Cider House Rules) vs. Jimmy Livingston (Bubble Boy)
Homer: Is trained to perform abortions if necessary; lives in an orphanage.
Jimmy: Will pursue his true love to the ends of the earth; lives in a plastic bubble.
Winner: Jimmy!
Red Pollard (Seabiscuit) vs. Jack Twist (Brokeback Mountain)
Red: Successfully jockey; prone to injury, partially blind in one eye.Jack: Successful rodeo rider; prone to infidelity, bi-curious.
Winner: Red!
James Leer (Wonder Boys) vs. Robert Graysmith (Zodiac)
James: Talented writer; compulsive liar, killer of dogs.Robert: Talented cartoonist; compulsive investigator of serial killers.
Winner: Robert!

More rumours of break-up

Reese Witherspoon at The Houses of Parliament (the London Eye and Westminster Bridge in the background), London, where she spoke out against "pandemic" domestic violence on 2nd December, 2009. Reese said there was an "inpenetrable wall of silence around violence" and she "cannot tell you a person that I've met on earth who hasn't had this experience".

Is Jake Gyllenhaal and Reese Witherspoon's relationship on the rocks or are they just rumours?

"Although reps for Reese Witherspoon and Jake Gyllenhaal denied to People magazine that the couple split, a Sunday visit by Jake’s assistant to Reese’s place suggests otherwise. After arriving at 7 p.m., X17 reports, the lackey spent 15 minutes inside before emerging with two pieces of luggage, which she then schlepped to Jake’s.

“She looked like she had a job to do”, paparazzi who witnessed the stop-by said. “She was in and out very quickly, and she had two bags with her in the car when she left.” Caught red-handed with the smoking ... suitcases?

Natalie Portman plays a real mother in "Brothers"

A scene of "Brothers", featuring a meltdown by Tobey Maguire opposite Natalie Portman.

Natalie Portman, Jim Sheridan and Tobey Maguire attend the Cinema Society and DKNY Men screening of "Brothers" after party at Abe & Arthur's on November 22, 2009 in New York City.

"It was such a fantastic opportunity because so many parts written for females my age are just, like, the cute, girlish love interest. To get to play a real woman who's really strong and a good mother was really a great opportunity. It was not that challenging to be mother-ish because I have the most maternal mom in the world. So I've had a role model for my entire life.""I feel like I'm coming into my womanhood, and I'm less afraid or maybe I'm just getting old. I think about having kids, but I think you can't plan for that sort of thing. It's not like you can work at it."But she wouldn't send her kids to war.
"I could not do it myself. But, I also think that in the world we live in, in certain countries, you can't not have an army. Obviously, I'm referring specifically to Israel. I think if Israel didn't have an army, it wouldn't exist. That's a hypothesis I really wouldn't want to test, like the Israelis going, 'OK, let's just try it out and not have an army and see what happens."

Redland - Into the Unknown

REDLAND TRAILER - Into the Unknown

"Adden is his daughter Mary Ann, a blonde mite of a thing in her teens who has developed a mighty carnal crush on strapping neighbour Charlie (played by Toben Seymour, Redland second-unit camera director, and Norton’s best friend). Ross Riege is the second unit DP.

Pa is not at all pleased, for reasons that aren’t strictly paternal.

“My character doesn’t know much about the outside world,” says Adden of the girl Norton calls a “woodland sprite, a Holy Fool".

‘‘In Russian literature, fools bring about profound change.” Got that one right.
Redland is shot in non-linear fashion on film that is 20 years past its due date in places and with a lens swaddled in never less than seven filters, and often more. It’s literally intoxicating to watch so much beauty through what – again in places – looks like a chink in the wooden siding of the family shack. In others, where gifted cameraman Zoran Popovic gets in close to film nature in microcosm, it’s a cinematic equivalent of magic mushroom vision. The universe comes clear. It’s just fuzzy around the edges.
“The film came to me in images”, Norton recalls. “The first image I had is of a man in a hat firing a rifle. ‘Who is this man? He’s a father and he’s trying to feed his family.’

“When I was writing the script, my father was dying of cancer. It made me ask the large existential questions: ‘Why am I here? What’s the point?’ ”
Redland is ultimately about the mystery of life. Norton shot the film in seven weeks with a small cast and crew in the old-growth forests of Humboldt.

“The locations were great. We were all staying together in a hotel in a small town, and we bonded".

"There's no doubt that when times are hardest is when people turn to art for both reprieve and answers. This is most obviously seen in religion and mythology. Whether or not one is a believer, it's fairly apparent that people find courage, strength, and release through the epic mythic poems, and the vast artwork they inspire, and therefore it is no surprise that the poorest populations are by far the most religious. Art and myth are inseparable, as art is the means by which myth is created and communicated. Now in terms of our own time and place, film is the modern world's most powerful art form. Cinema is the tool by which today's most famous modern artists (directors, actors, composers, etc.) choose to tell new myths. And in times of economic or other hardships, cinema has always flourished. As proof of this, I would point to film history". -written by Redland's director Asiel Norton Source: www.huffingtonpost.com

Adam Lambert wants "Suburban Decay" in Eclipse's soundtrack

Adam Lambert, the American Idol Runner Up, talks with MTV about his song “Suburban Decay” and how it would fit on the Eclipse soundtrack.

Adam Lambert, Leighton Meester (Gossip girl) and Ashley Greene (Alice Cullen in "Twilight") in the backstage from "It´s On with Alexa Chung" Show.

"Adam Lambert is throwing his hat in the ring for a spot on the next "Twilight" soundtrack. The "American Idol" star mentioned he'd like to hear his unreleased track "Suburban Decay" on "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse", according to MTV. The track is produced by Rob Cavallo and was originally intended for his new album "For Your Entertainment" but didn't make the cut."I think it will find a home, on a soundtrack or something ... maybe 'Twilight', " he said. "It just didn't quite fit [in my album]. It's very theatrical. ... It's very campy, and it was just a bit too campy for the album as a big picture... Hey, 'Eclipse' ... Want my song? It's kind of about vampires."
"Campy" isn't exactly the word to describe the washy intensity of this last compilation, put together by "New Moon" music supervisor and indie expert Alexandra Patsavas".

Will "Breaking Down" be divided in two films?

"They will likely have to cut a few big checks if they decided, as rumored, to split Stephenie Meyer's final "Twilight" novel, "Breaking Dawn," into two pictures. Sources said Summit has set Melissa Rosenberg -- who wrote the first three films -- to finish the series, but Summit has to clear several hurdles before Rosenberg learns how many more scripts she'll write. One of those hurdles is figuring out whether "New Moon" director Chris Weitz will respond favorably to overtures from the film company and the cast to shoot two more films, back to back.Summit execs would not comment, but multiple sources said the company wants to go the two-film route, which means reopening negotiations and securing approval from the author. It also means making new deals with a principal cast that is only locked up for four films. If "Breaking Dawn" becomes two pictures, all of the key cast members will get fat raises, and the three principals -- Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner -- could land paydays in the eight-figure range".
