"Brothers": Oscar contender?

"Originally scheduled for release last fall, "Brothers" was pushed out of 2009 and there were rumors it was headed to this year's Cannes Film Festival. Needless to say, that didn't occur and the film finally found a December release date. It was also unclear who was releasing the Relativity Media financed film. MGM was supposedly original distributor, but Relativity quietly moved the film to Lionsgate where it has a new overall distribution deal. Lionsgate have some true creative mavens and as you can tell by the pretty poster below, "Brothers" is being positioned as a drama, not an in-your-face thriller as the embedded trailer suggests (or at least in its second half). The movie finds Natalie Portman as a young mother of two whose husband (Tobey Maguire) seemingly is lost in Afghanistan. During a period of mourning she becomes involved with his caring and sensitive brother (Jake Gyllenhaal). When Maguire's character is discovered alive, he comes home a changed man, jealous and suspicious of his wife's actions while he was gone. Maguire is refreshingly dark and manic as the type of on edge character we rarely see him play, but the preview doesn't do much to convince anyone Portman or Gyllenhaal are doing anything but the one-note mopeyness both have spent years perfecting. It also doesn't help that the trailer's second half has a forced thriller arc that seems out of place when compared to the picture's poster or the tone of the beginning of the preview. Note to Lionsgate: this trailer may have tested better than other versions, but it feels like you're selling the movie as something it's not and audiences will smell it a mile away. If it's a drama, sell it as a drama and hope the critic's fall your way". Source: www.hitfix.com

Twilight's meaning

"Twilight is just the book for these times. It’s the ultimate story of abstinence, of acknowledging the carnal instincts but just saying ‘no.’ If you are a teenager, or remember being one, then you know that this is near impossible. In many ways, the most unrealistic element of the story isn’t the vampire but the notion that bad boy love could be eternal. Only a teenaged girl could believe that, but this book was written for them. Meyer may not have mastered the subjunctive (eg if Edward was a vampire?) but she has mastered romance. The anticipation is more than the kiss. Edward is incredibly appealing, and the story is a fast paced page turner. I would have adored Twilight as a teenager. Meyer captures first love but also the tortuous insecurity of trying to fit in and not having control of the future". Source: blog.sarahlaurence.com

"Twilight Delight" photographs.

"Twilight: in that zone between the certainty of day and fear of the dark, Gregory Crewdson sets his eerie, enigmatic photographs. A woman floats in her flooded living room, a cow appears to have fallen from the sky onto a front lawn, a gang of teenagers, seemingly hypnotized, pile up household objects for a bonfire. Created as elaborately staged tableaux, this series of images suggests the bizarre yet beautiful surrealities behind deceptively familiar suburban facades.
Scheduled to accompany three simultaneous gallery exhibitions in Spring 2002 and a subsequent retrospective at Mass MoCA, this book chronicles the completion of the Twilight series, which Crewdson began in 1998. Including both production stills and the 40 finished images, all in full color, it also features an essay by Rick Moody, a novelist equally renowned for exposing the underbelly of small-town, middle-class America".

Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel - InStyle photoshoot

Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel in the InStyle photoshoot, August 2009 issue ("500 days of Summer").

On the set of the Runaways video

Jake Gyllenhaal as Axl Rose?!

"I'm starting to hate myself a little bit. How could I be so damn late in finding out that there's a movie coming out based on Kurt Cobain's biography. What kind of a hardcore fan am I?

Anyway, I know I can forgive myself for that in time. So according to the website where I found the information.
* The movie is based on Charles Cross's biography of Cobain, "Heavier than Heaven", which would likewise be the title of the movie.* Courtney Love, executive producer, has said she wants actor Ryan Gosling to play her late husband Kurt Cobain in a film. (Well for those who don't know her she's the widow of Kurt Cobain and the mother of their child Frances Bean Cobain)* Courtney who seems to be a fan of Scarlett Johansson wants that she portray her.
Well, I just hope Courtney, as executive producer won't make a trash out of this movie. But I SERIOUSLY DOUBT that the hardcore fans and loyalists would really appreciate the film, if up to now, the truth about Kurt Cobain's death has been a mystery for some and it's a fact that Love is being said to be involved in Kurt's death. Now, based on Rollingstone Magazine pre-production has finally kicked-off, and the initial casts of the film aside from Scarlett Johansson and Ryan Gosling are:

Justin Long as Krist Noveselic, Nirvana's bassist
Topher Grace as Dave Grohl, Nirvana's drummer
Cate Blanchett as Eric Erlandson, served as Singer, guitarist, and songwriter for Nirvana
Jake Gyllenhaal as Axl Rose of the Guns 'N Roses
Jack Black as King Buzzo, (Buzz Osbourne)
Emile Hirsch as Eddie Vedder, lead singer of Pearl JamEddie Vedder and Emile Hirsch in San Diego 04/16/08
Toni Collette as Kim Gordon, of Sonic Youth
Ron Jeremy as Tad Doyle, of the band TAD"

Alpha Dog (Before Hollywood) video

A video featuring some stills from "Alpha Dog" (2006) and photos of the actors who starred in the film directed by Nick Cassavetes.

Songs "If you see her, say hello" by Bob Dylan and "Before Hollywood" by The Go-Betweens.

"Charged with murder in 2000, pot dealer Jesse James Hollywood fled to Brazil, where he was captured in 2005. Alpha Dog is based on Hollywood's life. In his recent trial, Hollywood claimed innocence to the charge that he ordered the death of a rival's 15-year-old brother, who he and friends abducted. On July 8, Hollywood was found guilty of first-degree murder and kidnapping.

The 29-year-old Hollywood (see mug shot at left) followed his father into the marijuana trade. He says he was making $120,000 a year by 2000, when a beef with a friend who owed him $1,200 got out of hand.
As told in Alpha Dog, Johnny Trulove (Emile Hirsch) forced Elvis (Shawn Hatosy) to shoot Zack (Anton Yelchin). In real life, Ryan Hoyt is on death row at San Quentin for the murder of Nicholaus Markowitz, brother of Ben (a very scary Ben Foster in Alpha Dog)". Source: www.celebstoner.com

"The now-29-year-old was convicted Wednesday of first degree murder by a Santa Barbara jury of nine women and three men. The conviction comes with a special circumstance enhancement that means Hollywood faces either death or life in state prison without the possibility of parole.Emile Hirsch as Johnny Truelove (aka Jesse James Hollywood in "Alpha Dog").
When asked if she was relieved it was over, Susan Markowitz — who has remained stoic throughout the trial — responded, “It’ll never be over.” She added, “I’m ready to carry Nick’s memory into the world,” telling reporters she intended to come out with a book in the coming months.

Ben Markowitz, who has shouldered much of the guilt for his actions leading to his brother’s murder, was content. “It’s just a big relief. The last thing I want is for [Hollywood] to be free”, he said just before walking up to his father, Jeff, and stepmother Susan to hug them, the group filled with smiles".

*I want to dedicate this post to Susan Markowitz and his son Nicholas Markowitz's memory, in the hopes that J.J. Hollywood's trial and verdict can bring some peace to all the involved people's lives.
