TEENAGE ANGST

SEX. VIOLENCE. WHATEVER.

"Teen movies used to be about growing pains, bunking off school and prom night. Now it's mental illness, apocalypse and suicide." -Skye Sherwin on how a genre got dangerous.

"The teen movie, as we know it, appears to exist only in a haze of Gen X nostalgia for the mid-1980s powerhouse that was John Hughes and his acolytes. But the American teen movie never really squeaked its last gasp. The forthcoming "Brick", for example, is a leftfield, low-budget indie film that defies expectation. First-time writer-director Rian Johnson's novel offering melds high-school movie with deadpan noir, creating a dark, surreal world where a 16-year-old gumshoe goes in search of his missing ex-girlfriend.

[...] Between then and now, however, a swathe of independent films has proved there is a market for a different kind of American teen movie in a world where youth sells and age buys.

"The much chewed-over suicide of Kurt Cobain in 1994 marked an end of the purity of rebel teen spirit. The second is the Columbine high-school shootings in 1999. The defining tone of subsequent teen movies for grown-ups is summed up in a single word: angst. There has been mental illness and apocalypse (Donnie Darko), suicide pacts (The Virgin Suicides), paedophilia (Mysterious Skin) and a whole lot of dead bodies (George Washington, Mean Creek). Rian Johnson sums it up nicely:

[...] The triumph of Johnson's coiling plot and bleakly funny look, and Gordon-Levitt's crisp, shaded performance, is that you buy Brendan's asphalt-playground alienation and romantic anguish. The writer-director supplies the actor with words and actions that weather Brendan beyond his years. Gordon-Levitt gives them a depth charge. New Kirsten's Beau?

Kirsten Dunst has been seen on a date with Drew Barrymore's ex-boyfriend.

The Spider-Man actress and Strokes drummer Fabrizio Moretti enjoyed lunch together at Los Angeles' Joan's on Third restaurant on Monday (22.01.07).

A source told Us Weekly: "They are friends but she wants it to be more."

The 26-year-old musician - who was dumped by Drew, his girlfriend of five years, earlier this month - is not the only suitor Kirsten has been stepping out with.

The 24-year-old actress has also been seen enjoying the company of Adam Brody - who recently split from his long-term girlfriend and The O.C. co-star Rachel Bilson.

The pair were seen partying at hip Los Angeles nightclub Hyde on January 6.

According to friends, Kirsten is still trying to get over breaking up with Jake Gyllenhaal in 2004.

The source said: "Kirsten has been lonely."

Kirsten - who has also been romantically linked to Maroon 5 singer Adam Levine

and her Spider-Man co-star Tobey Maguire - recently blamed her split from Jake on work pressures.

She said: "We tried to be honest with each other and work it out but it is hard to have a relationship in this business."

GYLLENHAAL TO HOST TECHNICAL OSCARS

"New mom Maggie Gyllenhaal has signed on to present the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' Scientific and Technical Awards at the Beverly Wilshire hotel in Beverly Hills. Among the 15 awards Gyllenhall will present during the ceremony is the Academy's Gordon E. Sawyer Award, which is being bestowed on Ray Feeney for his lifetime of technological contributions to the industry. Also, the John A. Bonner Award will be given to Richard Edlund, in appreciation for outstanding service and dedication in upholding the high standards of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Segments of the Scientific and Technical Awards presentation will be shown during the 79th Academy Awards telecast on February 25.
