"Derek Cianfrance's Blue Valentine was originally set up at Thinkfilm and Cianfrance was the DoP on a Sundance entry called Streets of Legend (2003). Douchebag helmer Drake Doremus was in Park City last year for Spooner - not for Sundance, but Slamdance. I know this because I had a convo we his producer during a screening of Bronson. Ryan Piers Williams' The Dry Land probably counts as Maya Releasing's first ever participation at the festival. Josh Radnor's happythankyoumoreplease is a long, one word film title". Spooner and Rose (Matthew Lillard and Nora Zehetner) in the Aztec Hotel.
Slamdance '09: The Warren Report. Matthew Lillard and Nora Zehetner in Spooner. Warren chats with Matthew Lillard in the Seattle garage at Slamdance in regards to Matthew's latest film, the power of the critic, and why it is not always an honor just to be nominated.
Spooner cast and crew answer questions after their Slamdance premiere.
Herman Spooner is a used car salesman who still lives at home with his parents. Spooner is fairly set in his unfulfilling routine, but turning 30 marks a hard deadline set by his mom and dad to get a place of his own. To top it off, Spooner's boss is putting on the pressure to bring in some numbers, or face the chopping block. Headed for one of the worst days of his life, Spooner meets the girl of his dreams, Rose. Forgoing all other priorities, Spooner is now working on winning her heart, but on their perfect date, she breaks the news that she is about to leave for the Philippines. How far will Spooner go to show Rose he really knows how to spoon?
Humorous, minimal mushiness and just the right amount of charm keeps you entertained throughout this wonderful story, without falling into predictable indie-cliches, as well as a fantastic performance from lead actor, Matthew Lillard. A great little film that does everything it should. - Saucy Brown, Film Programmer

Sheridan impressed with Maguire, Portman and Gyllenhaal
Inside Reel Interviews Jake Gyllenhaal for “Brothers” (2009).
"Maguire brilliantly portrays the changes in Sam’s personality.
An actor with a good resume of solid dramatic roles, Maguire has starred in “The Ice Storm” (1997), “The Cider House Rules” (1999) and “Wonder Boys” (2000), as well as giving heart to his “Spiderman” role as Peter Parker.
Here he gives his all, to great success.
Nominated for an Oscar and a Golden Globe winner for “Closer” (2004), Portman was also very good in “V For Vendetta” (2006). In “Brothers”, Portman is terrific as the good, confused wife, who suffers from her own scars from the entire incident.
Gyllenhaal shows great restraint in not making Tommy a caricature.
From his days as “Donnie Darko” (2001) to “Brokeback Mountain” (2005), Gyllenhaal has played some very interesting characters. “Brothers” is not his first foray into the Middle East crisis. In 2005 he starred in “Jarhead”, a film about a marine in the 2003 Gulf War, and in “Rendition” in 2007, about a CIA analyst coping with terrorism and the complex issues of torture in the Middle East". Tobey Maguire, Natalie Portman and Jake Gyllenhaal at Brothers' Press Conference - New York City on 21th November, 2009.
"Sheridan was impressed with the discipline of Maguire, the polish of Portman and, perhaps most of all, the easy authenticity of Gyllenhaal, whose somewhat scattered on-set demeanor is a search for clues, not a symptom of cluelessness.
Jake Gyllenhaal at 'Brothers' Press Conference - Los Angeles, on 3rd December, 2009.
"Jake is very good at that, searching for something in a scene," Sheridan said. With a chuckle he added: "It's not that he doesn't know his lines. He's always looking for something in the scene. It makes it feel real." Source: www.latimes.com

New Hollywood Heartthrobs
"Johnny, Brad and George have had a long and richly rewarding run at the box office. But the holy trinity of Hollywood leading men is really beginning to show its age (Brad Pitt turns 46 on December 18; Johnny Depp is already 46; and George Clooney 48).
The major studios are now looking to Robert Pattinson, currently putting a bite into the box office with the latest movie from the Twilight vampire saga, to lead the next generation of bankable heart-throbs.
Robert Pattinson, Edward Cullen in "Twilight" (2008).
The 23-year-old English star of New Moon is having a dramatic effect on young women and movie executives alike. Pattinson is being talked up as the leader of the next generation of male stars with the talent and appeal to carry a major movie.Pretenders to the throne have come and faded away (with the likes of Ethan Hawke, Jake Gyllenhaal, Ewan McGregor and our own Colin Farrell falling just short).Note from Weirdland: how Jake Gyllenhaal falling short?
He's jumping high, never falling short. And the studios are now set to jump a generation to the likes of Pattinson and -- possibly -- High School Musical's Zac Efron, young actors who are judged to have the potential to be classic leading men.
They certainly have captured the young female market.Hollywood's holy grail is to find young talent that can emulate established stars such as George Clooney and Brad Pitt.Zac Efron has made a deliberate move away from musical movies with his next big release, The Death and Life of Charlie St Cloud. Based on a popular novel, it sees Efron starring alongside Kim Basinger, playing a man who is devastated by the death of his younger brother.
Efron is very aware of the need to stretch himself in more substantial roles -- while not alienating his core audience.
With movie-going audiences now heavily skewed towards teens, the Jonas brothers, Transformers star Shia LaBeouf and Pattinson have the kind of earning potential that Hollywood has never seen in actors in their early 20s. British hunk Pattinson was "the most in-demand actor of the generation. Now the trend in Hollywood is not so much to have an actor who carries the movies, but a brand, like Twilight. Robert Pattinson is one of the few actors that the studios can build a movie around."His co-star, Taylor Lautner, is also hot property". Source: www.independent.ie

Cameron Diaz & Emile Hirsch, candidates for L.A. Candy movie?
Lauren Conrad wants Lo Bosworth in the "L.A. Candy" flick.
"So when it comes to Kristin Cavallari and Brody Jenner's fictional selves, they have some A-list talent in mind. Kristin Cavallari, Brody Jenner Pick Who Would Play Them In 'L.A. Candy'?
Cameron Diaz in Marie Claire (UK) - January 2010.
"Oh lord! I don't know if anyone can hold up to that," Cavallari joked to MTV News. "It's a tough job. I don't know if we're going off age. I mean ... I don't know. If we're not going off age, I would say ... I mean, I love Cameron Diaz."She added that she would happily play Diaz in a flick, so she would hope the actress would do the same for her. "That's who I would want to play in a movie," she said. "So if she could that for me, that would be great."
Brody Jenner, however, had a harder time choosing, mainly because he'd really like to play himself in the film. "Me? I mean, I'd like to play me, realistically," he explained. "But who would I like to play me? Nobody."He then reconsidered his options and made a more viable casting decision. "Let me think about this. ... If I were to think of one person to play me it would have to be ... Emile Hirsch". Jenner has a stupendous taste, and he's so right about Hirsch's gifts in looks and acting departments. Emile has already played several real characters on-screen before in "Lords of Dogtown", "Alpha Dog", "Into the Wild" and "Milk" so far.

Rachel Weisz excited to work with Robert Pattinson
Rachel Weisz says she's excited to work With Robert Pattinson.
"The ironic thing is, RPattz’s co-star, Oscar winner Rachel Weisz, has plenty of details to dish about the drama but knows virtually nothing about “Twilight”.“Meeting him was vampiric. He sucked my blood,” laughed Weisz, remembering their introduction. “Wait, is he the vampire? He is the vampire, right?” And in “Unbound Captives”, Pattinson is eager to portray a teen living in the Western frontier who was kidnapped by Comanche warriors at a young age; Weisz is slated to play the mother on a mission to get her son back. Co-starring alongside Hugh Jackman, Pattinson told us recently that “Captives” offers him a character who “can’t really be more different from Edward,” the leading man of “Twilight.”“It’s an independent movie, and they are raising the money, so hopefully it’ll happen”, Weisz said of the flick, which will mark the writing and directing debut of veteran actress Madeline Stowe. “I don’t know if it will [be made], but yeah, I’m very excited".“It’s a great screenplay, and [Pattinson and Jackman] are both great actors,” Weisz added of why she is attached to the film. Rian Johnson with Rachel Weisz at "The Brothers Bloom" TIFF Press Conference on 9th November 2008.
“I like to work with all kinds of talented people, whatever the age.”Weisz — who can be seen later this month in director Peter Jackson’s drama “The Lovely Bones” — said another reason she’s eager to work with RPattz is his mystique.“He wasn’t star-struck. He’s got a whole rebel vibe, right? Yeah, that was his vibe,” she said of their meeting. “He’s kind of iconoclastic. He’s flaunting authority. Yeah, pretty cool.”
