Happy 31th birthday, Maggie!

"Milk" Trailer video

Academy Award nominee Gus Van Sant directs Academy Award winner Sean Penn as gay rights icon Harvey Milk. Mr. Milk (1930-1978) was an activist and politician, and the first openly gay man to be elected to public office in America; in 1977, he was voted to the city supervisors' board of San Francisco. The following year, both he and the city's mayor George Moscone were shot to death by another city supervisor, Dan White. Mr. Milk was previously the subject of the Academy Award-winning documentary feature "The Times of Harvey Milk," but "Milk" -- filmed on location in San Francisco -- is the first non-documentary feature to explore the man's life and career.

The Dark Knight's score disqualified

"As it was playing I realized once again, there are a few tracks on that thing that really get your motor running. The opening track, “Why So Serious?”, is an excellent starting point but tracks like “I’m Not a Hero” and “Like a Dog Chasing Cars” really catch your ear while listening. Unfortunately, said score has been disqualified by the Academy music branch and won’t be in the running for Original Score at the 2009 Oscars.

The move mirrors a similar decision disqualifying the score for Batman Begins of which composers Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard, also collaborated on. The catch, as reported by Variety, citing “sources inside the committee” is that the big issue was the fact there were five names listed as composers on the music cue sheet, the official studio document that specifies every piece of music (along with its duration and copyright owner) in the film.

Apparently the decision of whether to include the score for The Dark Knight in the running or not involved four hours of discussion over the past two executive committee meetings, but apparently the fact more than 60%, but less than 70%, of the score was credited to Zimmer and Howard was an issue. The unfortunate thing here is the decision to include the three additional names - music editor Alex Gibson, ambient music designer Mel Wesson and composer Lorne Balfe - was a way of financially rewarding parts of the music team who helped make the overall work successful. I guess karma doesn’t always work for awards, but with The Dark Knight now only $2.4 million away from over $1 billion in box-office receipts I would say karma has a way of working things out".

Jake's convincing accent

"Because there is no morning so terrible that it cannot be rendered less terrible with some one-on-one time with Jake Gyllenhaal in a cleavage-enhancing under-chemise, we bring you this ET footage from the set of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time—a Jerry Bruckheimerian extravaganza the superproducer says will be cinema's greatest headdress-and-scimitar-heavy triumph since Lawrence of Arabia. If you listen carefully, you can hear smacking sounds coming from the reporter as she gets her first taste of Jake's "convincing" accent (like the hunky love child of Peter O'Toole and Helen Mirren), then later observes, "There's been so much buzzz about your physeeque!" There certainly has been—some of it emanating from Defamer HQ as worker drones vigorously rubbed their wings together to this photo. Though it doesn't open until May 2010, we can hardly wait to check out Jake's vast array of camel-gadgets".

Entertainment Tonight - Prince of Persia (First Look)

First look at Disney's 'Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time' starring Jake Gyllenhaal.

Obama's Inauguration

"Exactly which 30 Rock actress is expected to be in the VIP section when Barack Obama swears on the Bible on Jan. 20, 2009? Well...

Not Tina Fey, sorry. At least, she isn't confirmed yet. But Jane Krakowski sure is, along with Anne Hathaway, Maggie Gyllenhaal, her man Peter Sarsgaard, Spike Lee, Kerry Washington, Josh Lucas and a whole bunch of others.

The stars are being rounded up by the Creative Coalition, an organization created to bring Hollywood together with political and social causes. And just in case you were wondering, these particular stars aren't just bandwagon fans who clamored for tickets once Obama won.

"Anne, Josh, Susan [Sarandon] and Spike were all with us at the Democratic National Convention as well," a publicity rep for the Creative Coalition told me. "Maggie and Peter are a recent addition to the group who joined us at our pre-Hofstra debates event on Long Island".
