Disney pushes Prince of Persia back

"Disney and producer Jerry Bruckheimer have pushed back the release of fantasy actioner "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time" by nearly a year, from June 19, 2009, to Memorial Day weekend 2010.

Officially, Disney said it wants to allow plenty of time for post-production considering that the tentpole will require extensive special effects to create its fantasy world and setpieces.

In addition, however, the move takes "Prince of Persia" out of the path of "Transformers 2," which DreamWorks and Paramount open on June 26, 2009.

Filmmaker Mike Newell began lensing the pic last week in Morocco and will remain there until the production moves to London.

Decision to delay the release by a year caught some by surprise, although the calendar could continue to see major reshufflings because of the ongoing labor strife in Hollywood. Studios may want to allow for extra cushion in case of any production delays.

Bruckheimer and Disney don’t want to take any chances with "Prince of Persia," which they are hoping turns into a mega-franchise, along the lines of "Pirates of the Caribbean," that can feed the entire Disney empire, from sequels to potential TV or direct-to-DVD spinoffs, merchandise and Disney theme-park attractions.

Pic, based on Ubisoft’s bestselling vidgame, toplines Jake Gyllenhaal, Gemma Arterton, Ben Kingsley and Alfred Molina.

In its new date, "Prince of Persia" opens a week after the release of "Shrek Goes Fourth."

Brokeback Mountain star Gyllenhaal, 27, has told friends he and Reese, 32 – who won Best Actress for Walk The Line – plan to wed on or around his birthday on December 19 after he finishes his new film, Prince Of Persia.

A source on the set of the £100 million epic adventure, currently filming in Morocco, said: ‘Jake is telling everyone they are getting married at Christmas.‘He told me he had proposed several times but she kept telling him she wanted to give their relationship more time. "Prince of Persia" delay

"Not content to let one of their potential blockbusters get crushed by giant, transforming robots, Disney has decided to push PRINCE OF PERSIA back a full year to Memorial Day 2010. The movie was originally scheduled for release on June 19, 2009, one week before TRANSFORMERS: REVENGE OF THE FALLEN would unleash its LaBeoufness on the world. The on-the-record reason for pushing PERSIA back was to "allow plenty of time for post-production" and an "extra cushion" in case of SAG delays. (I've heard car salesman with better bullshit lines than that.) Disney and producer Jerry Bruckheimer feel they could have a PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN success with PERSIA and want to make sure it's the idea conditions for a release. Strangely their new date still puts them in one week's proximity to another franchise juggernaut - SHREK GOES FOURTH. PERSIA, which stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Alfred Molina and Gemma Arterton, just began filming this week in Morocco".

Maggie's fashion disorder?

"Surely, promoting The Dark Knight was the perfect way for this indie princess to present her quirky personal style as a charming antidote to Hollywood’s cookie-cutter starlets. Instead, she gave us a fashion roller-coaster, sporting a schizophrenic range of looks that made us wonder if she threw them into her bags at random, possibly while blindfolded.
Maggie’s lone hit came at the Stateside premiere, to which she wore a gorgeous black flowered Dries Van Noten gown (above, center), with minimal accessories beyond the kind of shoulders that make us drop and do ten (okay … five) on the spot. -Note from Weirdland (Our collaborator Penny Lane knows Mr. Van Noten's secretary!)- That's the perfect modern, offbeat spin on a classic cut, and a great example of keeping it simple without being a snore.

But it’s sandwiched between two fussy, bipolar flops. Maggie's floor-length blue-and-black Zac Posen is the clothing version of a split-personality soap-opera character: the pretty, generally well-liked sheath fighting to peek out from behind the domineering, overworked, bed-jacket-esque overlay that appeared one day after a bump on the head and started slutting around town ruining their joint reputation. And that vintage black cocktail dress can't figure out WHAT it wants to be. Did she knot a velvet toga over a slip and think a feathered headband would be the magic Band-Aid that patched it all together?
Multiple personality disorder, dressed in Gaultier and Stella McCartney.

Then Maggie threw in a few ill-advised retro curveballs. So while we’d hoped to emerge from the shadow of The Dark Knight’s press onslaught refreshed by Maggie’s off-kilter charm and sassy style, here we are throwing up our hands and saying to ourselves, "I wonder what Katie Holmes would have worn if she'd stuck around?" The only firm statement these looks make is that Maggie favors an updo. And unless she’s hankering for an Us Weekly cover about her bobby-pin addiction, we hope she’ll consider a more all-around cohesive approach to her next summer-movie fashion spree. After all, if you want your clothes to make a statement, it's better if they're not speaking in tongues. —The Fug Girls
