Leonardo DiCaprio: Shutter Island review

Leonardo DiCario is Teddy Daniels in "Shutter Island" (2010).

"It is a crime that SHUTTER ISLAND isn’t in the Awards race this year, as I feel it would most likely run off with the top honor and Best Actor for Leonardo DiCaprio – and I’m someone that isn’t always in Leo’s corner. This is not only his best work for Scorsese, but his best role to date. And the Doctors? Jesus. When you have Ben Kingsley running the loony bin and Max Von Sydow as a possible Nazi experimenter… and then you add to it the idea that this whole island could be an experiment from the CIA to test things that the Nazis were working on, that the Soviets are currently working on – and this is the hush hush – place where the already criminally insane bat nuts whack jobs are locked up.The whole film evokes at the beginning that quiet unsettling normality that I love out of Douglas Sirk’s world… but as the film moves on it begins to conjure comparisons to the work of Hitchcock, Sam Fuller and Fritz Lang. There’s something wrong and off about everything on the island. The doctors are definitely up to something – and it seems as though everyone from the guards to the orderlies… well, they are all in on whatever it could be.
The film has the pretense that it is a mystery. DiCaprio and Ruffalo are there to find her, but there’s zero clues. Everyone claims they were at their posts and that she apparently just evaporated. Then there’s the reason Leo wanted to get to the island, which involves Jackie Earle Haley’s George Noyce (Nightmares man, freakiest fuck I’ve seen on film in a while!)The surrealistic dream imagery and possible drug dosing imagery is some of the most inspired, beautiful, haunting imagery from Scorsese’s entire career. This is a triumph of filmmaking. The surrealistic dream imagery and possible drug dosing imagery is some of the most inspired, beautiful, haunting imagery from Scorsese’s entire career. "TJ Forney is 13-years-old. Two months ago his mother was killed in an accident, so he and his broken dad, Paul, move in with TJ's grandmother to pick up the pieces.

Hesher is a loner. He hates the world and everyone in it. He has long greasy hair, a baby moustache, a Metallica t-shirt and homemade tattoos. He is malnourished and smokes a lot of cigarettes. He likes to get into fights, start fires and blow things up. He lives in his van...until he meets TJ.
"Hesher" is the story of a family struggling to deal with a loss and the anarchist head banger who helps them do it". Source: www.aceshowbiz.com

Gyllenhaal is a damaged charmer in "Brothers"

Movie clip for BROTHERS. 'Really Dead'. With Jake Gyllenhaal, Natalie Portman & Tobey Maguire.

"Maguire shines in the work's meatiest role, devolving from staid to explosive, and Gyllenhaal is perfectly cast as a damaged charmer.
Sheridan and his fantastic cinematographer (Frederick Elms) have created an understated yet stunning film, utilizing gorgeous wide-angle shots of American winterscapes and sunset Afghani caves to provide a balm to the action's weightiness. Dense, intelligent and moving, Brothers is one of the year's best films". Source: exclaim.ca

"David Lynch, who works the front desk at La Fonda, was particularly excited to see Brothers open last weekend. He had the pleasure of driving star Jake Gyllenhaal and his assistant Megan Milner around Santa Fe during the movie's filming. He also can be seen as an Al Qaida fighter in the movie. He's the one whose foot is shot off in the scene where Tobey Maguire is being rescued. You can see Lynch next in Love Ranch, starring Helen Mirren (Lynch is in a Thanksgiving scene with the Oscar winner)". Source: www.santafenewmexican.com

"Spooner" clips with Nora Zehetner

"Derek Cianfrance's Blue Valentine was originally set up at Thinkfilm and Cianfrance was the DoP on a Sundance entry called Streets of Legend (2003). Douchebag helmer Drake Doremus was in Park City last year for Spooner - not for Sundance, but Slamdance. I know this because I had a convo we his producer during a screening of Bronson. Ryan Piers Williams' The Dry Land probably counts as Maya Releasing's first ever participation at the festival. Josh Radnor's happythankyoumoreplease is a long, one word film title".

Spooner cast and crew answer questions after their Slamdance premiere.

Herman Spooner is a used car salesman who still lives at home with his parents. Spooner is fairly set in his unfulfilling routine, but turning 30 marks a hard deadline set by his mom and dad to get a place of his own. To top it off, Spooner's boss is putting on the pressure to bring in some numbers, or face the chopping block. Headed for one of the worst days of his life, Spooner meets the girl of his dreams, Rose. Forgoing all other priorities, Spooner is now working on winning her heart, but on their perfect date, she breaks the news that she is about to leave for the Philippines. How far will Spooner go to show Rose he really knows how to spoon?
Humorous, minimal mushiness and just the right amount of charm keeps you entertained throughout this wonderful story, without falling into predictable indie-cliches, as well as a fantastic performance from lead actor, Matthew Lillard. A great little film that does everything it should. - Saucy Brown, Film Programmer

Sheridan impressed with Maguire, Portman and Gyllenhaal

Inside Reel Interviews Jake Gyllenhaal for “Brothers” (2009).

"Maguire brilliantly portrays the changes in Sam’s personality.

An actor with a good resume of solid dramatic roles, Maguire has starred in “The Ice Storm” (1997), “The Cider House Rules” (1999) and “Wonder Boys” (2000), as well as giving heart to his “Spiderman” role as Peter Parker.

Here he gives his all, to great success.

Nominated for an Oscar and a Golden Globe winner for “Closer” (2004), Portman was also very good in “V For Vendetta” (2006).
In “Brothers”, Portman is terrific as the good, confused wife, who suffers from her own scars from the entire incident.

Gyllenhaal shows great restraint in not making Tommy a caricature.

From his days as “Donnie Darko” (2001) to “Brokeback Mountain” (2005), Gyllenhaal has played some very interesting characters.
“Brothers” is not his first foray into the Middle East crisis. In 2005 he starred in “Jarhead”, a film about a marine in the 2003 Gulf War, and in “Rendition” in 2007, about a CIA analyst coping with terrorism and the complex issues of torture in the Middle East". Source: www.santamariatimes.com

Tobey Maguire, Natalie Portman and Jake Gyllenhaal at Brothers' Press Conference - New York City on 21th November, 2009.

"Sheridan was impressed with the discipline of Maguire, the polish of Portman and, perhaps most of all, the easy authenticity of Gyllenhaal, whose somewhat scattered on-set demeanor is a search for clues, not a symptom of cluelessness.
Jake Gyllenhaal at 'Brothers' Press Conference - Los Angeles, on 3rd December, 2009.

"Jake is very good at that, searching for something in a scene," Sheridan said.
With a chuckle he added: "It's not that he doesn't know his lines. He's always looking for something in the scene. It makes it feel real." Source: www.latimes.com

New Hollywood Heartthrobs

"Johnny, Brad and George have had a long and richly rewarding run at the box office. But the holy trinity of Hollywood leading men is really beginning to show its age (Brad Pitt turns 46 on December 18; Johnny Depp is already 46; and George Clooney 48).
The major studios are now looking to Robert Pattinson, currently putting a bite into the box office with the latest movie from the Twilight vampire saga, to lead the next generation of bankable heart-throbs.
Robert Pattinson, Edward Cullen in "Twilight" (2008).

The 23-year-old English star of New Moon is having a dramatic effect on young women and movie executives alike. Pattinson is being talked up as the leader of the next generation of male stars with the talent and appeal to carry a major movie.
Pretenders to the throne have come and faded away (with the likes of Ethan Hawke, Jake Gyllenhaal, Ewan McGregor and our own Colin Farrell falling just short).Note from Weirdland: how Jake Gyllenhaal falling short?
He's jumping high, never falling short.
And the studios are now set to jump a generation to the likes of Pattinson and -- possibly -- High School Musical's Zac Efron, young actors who are judged to have the potential to be classic leading men.

They certainly have captured the young female market.
Hollywood's holy grail is to find young talent that can emulate established stars such as George Clooney and Brad Pitt.Zac Efron has made a deliberate move away from musical movies with his next big release, The Death and Life of Charlie St Cloud. Based on a popular novel, it sees Efron starring alongside Kim Basinger, playing a man who is devastated by the death of his younger brother.

Efron is very aware of the need to stretch himself in more substantial roles -- while not alienating his core audience.

With movie-going audiences now heavily skewed towards teens, the Jonas brothers, Transformers star Shia LaBeouf and Pattinson have the kind of earning potential that Hollywood has never seen in actors in their early 20s. British hunk Pattinson was "the most in-demand actor of the generation. Now the trend in Hollywood is not so much to have an actor who carries the movies, but a brand, like Twilight. Robert Pattinson is one of the few actors that the studios can build a movie around."His co-star, Taylor Lautner, is also hot property". Source: www.independent.ie
