Oscar voters forgot "Zodiac"

"Award fates didn't seem to matter Friday night as Fincher, just back from the Japanese launch of his movie, clearly had the Arlington crowd in the palm of his hand, even doing an amusing impression of his "Zodiac" cinematographer Harris Savides and another time jumping excitedly out of his chair to make a point. Unlike Rourke he watched all the film segments including a killer reel of his commercial and music video work. Seeing all his career achievements in one fell swoop like this proves Fincher really is the master director of the moment with consistently spectacular work in "Seven", "Panic Room", "Fight Club" and the one-two punch of "Benjamin Button" and "Zodiac", a March 2007 release that Oscar voters seemed to forget". His "Zodiac" star Jake Gyllenhaal made a special appearance to praise Fincher as did "Button's" Oscar-nominated Supporting Actress Taraji P. Henson".

Shutting down Guantanamo, Rendition

"Barack Obama has granted the CIA permission to continue carrying out the controversial Bush-era practice of extraordinary rendition, it has emerged.

And he did so just two days after becoming president and vowing to dismantle his predecessor's war on terror.

As the new U.S. President issued orders shutting down the American military prison at Guantanamo Bay and fought to show the Muslim world that 'America is not your enemy', it was revealed that the renditions programme may even be expanded.

Under executive orders signed by Mr Obama on January 22, two days after his inauguration, the CIA still has the authority to carry out renditions - secret abductions and transfers of prisoners to countries that cooperate with the United States. It even became the subject of a Hollywood film starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Reese Witherspoon. But despite the controversy surrounding the secretive practice, Mr Obama appears to have decided it was the one component of Mr Bush's war on terror that it must keep.

'Obviously you need to preserve some tools - you still have to go after the bad guys,' an Obama administration official told the LA Times.

'The legal advisors working on this looked at rendition. It is controversial in some circles and kicked up a big storm in Europe. But if done within certain parameters, it is an acceptable practice.' Source: www.dailymail.co.uk

"Rendition and temporary detention are tools in that effort - tools that now need to be as closely monitored and assessed as they were once recklessly abused".

Jennifer and Kirsten, caring their looks?

"Jennifer Aniston has snubbed a record-breaking $4 million offer–including a percentage deal that could have brought the price to $10 million–to recreate her nude January 2009 GQ cover photo for men’s mag giant Playboy.Playboy approached the former Friends star after the recent photoshoot, in which she posed in her birthday suit except for an appropriately placed necktie". "In response to complaints that she has gotten for her increasingly frumpy appearance, Kirsten Dunst confessed that she actually "couldn't care less" about the way she looks.

"I don't have the energy to care if people criticize the way I look", the 26 year-old actress tells Britain's OK!. "I'm over getting dressed up, although it's fun sometimes -- like when my younger brother Christian and I got ready together to go to the Oscars. But other than that, though, I couldn't care less. Being fun is way better than being beautiful. I would rather entertain people."
Dunst is expected to reprise her role as Mary Jane Watson in Spider-Man 4. Source: www.radaronline.com

Fincher: A big brain and a big heart

“So many people are making stories about heroes, I make the stories about perverts,” he commented. When asked by Hammond how does he feel after viewing his body of work, Fincher said, “I wonder if I should be in therapy more.”

A humble, bright, and funny guy, Fincher charmed the Santa Barbara audience with his wit and humor. In final remarks by actor Jake Gyllenhaal, he said, “I want to tell you a secret about David Fincher. He has a big brain and a big heart.” (we could tell!) Kudos to another outstanding artist to feature at the Film Festival!

G.I. Joe: The rise of Cobra

"Yesterday we got our first look at the new SuperBowl movie trailer for G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra and today we get to see what Joseph Gordon-Levitt (who plays master villain Cobra Commander) will look like in the film … kinda. Until now, the secret about Cobra Commander in this film has been on lock down but this weekend, new bio cards for some of the G.I. Joe characters have made their way to the Internets, including Cobra characters Storm Shadow, Zartan and The Doctor:One of these characters is JGL, I understand, as he will be seen thruout much of the film … but by the end of the movie he becomes Cobra Commander. As I recall, the man who eventually becomes Cobra Commander was a scientist who suffered a freak accident that destroyed his face, which left him mad, bitter and was required to wear a mask to cover his entire head".

'GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra' SuperBowl Commercial

According to information about the film both official and unofficial, The Doctor will eventually become Cobra Commander … who is played by Joesph Gordon-Levitt. In the comics, tho, The Doctor becomes Dr. Mindbender — the mad scientist who created Serpentor, the emperor of Cobra who replaces Cobra Commander as leader after he is deposed … but I’m getting way off topic. In any event, it appears that The Doctor and Cobra Commander are one and the same, at least in this new movie. Zartan, as you may or may not know, had chameleon-like abilities to change color in sunlight (his action figure did the same) and was a formidable master of disguise". Source: pinkisthenewblog.com

A win for "Milk"?

"If Slumdog does in fact stumble between now and February 17 (the last day for Oscar voters to turn in their ballots), Milk looks like it's best positioned to capitalize on the stumble. In addition to it being incredibly well-respected within the community of voters who make up the Academy, there are two main factors that could help propel the film to glory on Oscar night.

1) Milk Is Still Building Momentum - As Anne Thompson sagely reports, over at Variety, Focus Features has taken the slow-and-steady approach to building their Oscar campaign for Milk. Whereas their campaign for Brokeback Mountain in 2005 crested too early, Milk is only now going into wide release. If the movie can perform strongly this weekend, it will be top-of-mind for Academy voters as they begin casting their ballots.
2) A Win for Milk Helps Ease the Sting of the Brokeback Snub - As we mention above, Crash was able to overtake Brokeback Mountain in the Best Picture race in 2005. Some attribute this upset to the belief that some of the older ranks of the Academy held strong anti-gay beliefs, an assertion that Rope of Silicon brings up in a post that breaks down this year's Oscar race. In their eyes, a vote for Milk could help to reestablish the Academy as a place where tolerance prevails above all else".

Naomi Watts on Heath Ledger

"Naomi Watts graces the upcoming issue of PARADE. Inside she talks about former boyfriend Heath Ledger, who she met doing "Ned Kelly", and current love Liev Schreiber, with whom she has two young sons.
Heath and Jake at the 12th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards, January 2006.
On Heath:

"I hadn't really been that familiar with his work," Watts recalls. "Then, when I got to the set and did that first scene with him, I was like, 'Wow! This guy is alive.' It was just something deep in his eyes. You could look into them, and they would tell a thousand stories in one glance. There was a wonderful mixture of power and fragility at work in everything he did, which just pulls you in. His strength didn't scare you. It intrigued you. And his fragility touched you."

The couple parted amicably in 2004, separated by the distance of two growing careers, but stayed friends until Ledger's tragic death from an accidental overdose in early 2008 at age 28. "It's still incredibly difficult," Watts says, her voice trailing off".

Michelle Williams for coffee run

"Michelle takes her daughter Matilda, 3, for their regular coffee run during an early morning stroll to their neighborhood cafe in Brooklyn, New York on Friday (January 30).

An out-of-court deal was recently reached in a lawsuit over Heath Ledger’s $10 million life insurance policy. A lawyer for the actor had sued ReliaStar Life Insurance company, claiming it was refusing to pay death benefits to his daughter Matilda. ReliaStar had refused to honor the policy because it asserted that Heath’s death could have been a suicide. Details of the settlement are being kept confidential".

Amanda Seyfried - A Woman of Importance

"Mamma Mia! star Amanda Seyfried has beaten Lindsay Lohan to the lead role in a big-screen adaptation of Oscar Wilde play 'A Woman Of No Importance'. 'Mean Girls' star Lohan was first linked to the part in 2006, but she appears to have lost out to Seyfried, who will step back in time for the upper-class dark comedy, set in Britain's Victorian era.

She will star opposite Sean Bean, who will portray womaniser Lord Illingworth, and Annette Bening will play his mother, according to Variety". Source: www.imdb.com/news

"What made Lilly particularly awesome (aside from the fact that her character was a free spirited wild-child) was Amanda Seyfried's performance. Seyfried busted onto the scene as the dumbest of the Mean Girls, and impressed in Nine Lives
-she also notably appears on HBO's Big Love [as Sarah Henrickson]
Like her Veronica Mars costar Kristen Bell, Seyfried is shaping out to be one of the better actresses of our generation. Seyfried played head wound sporting Lilly in her pep squad uniform wry and witty, no sap only sarcasm".

Reese Witherspoon in "The Importance of Being Earnest" (2002) based on Oscar Wilde's play.
"After Reese Witherspoon won her Best Actress Academy Award for "Walk the Line" (2005) and solidified her standing as one of Hollywood's leading ladies, a spot opened up for Hollywood's newest wide-eyed and blonde ingénue. Amanda Seyfried had the talent, looks and charm to fill that role, with scene-stealing appearances in teen blockbusters, edgy Indies, and compelling TV series.
After making appearances on the big screen, Seyfried returned to television, playing Lilly Kane - the title character's murdered best friend - on "Veronica Mars" (UPN/CW, 2004-07). The actress' role involved flashbacks and visions, and it was often compared to the tragic Laura Palmer character in "Twin Peaks" (ABC, 1990-91).
In 2007, Seyfried appeared in "Alpha Dog", a violent drama inspired by the true story of Jesse James Hollywood, a drug dealer who became one of the youngest men ever on the FBI's Most Wanted List. The film boasted a cast of Hollywood up-and-comers, including Emile Hirsch, Ben Foster, and Justin Timberlake, along with veteran screen actors Bruce Willis and Sharon Stone. That same year, it was announced that Seyfried was to star as Sophie, the lead role in "Mamma Mia!" a lavish film version of the long-running Broadway production, opposite Meryl Streep, Colin Firth, and Pierce Brosnan".
