New Award for Maggie

STOCKHOLM (AFP) - The US movie "Sherrybaby," starring Maggie Gyllenhaal and directed by Laurie Collyier, won the Bronze Horse for best film at the Stockholm International Film Festival, organizers said.

Gyllenhaal also took home the award for best actress for her role in the film as Sherry, a young woman released from jail after serving a three-year sentence for a crime she committed as a 19-year-old heroin addict and who struggles to reestablish a relationship with her young daughter.

"A pure and heartbreaking work about survival and dignity. It takes you on a desperate quest for love, through a landscape of struggle, guilt and broken dreams which at times is hard to watch yet impossible to forget," the jury said in its motivation.

The best actor award went to Ryan Gosling for his role as a junior high school teacher who is caught by one of his students in a compromising situation in the movie "Half Nelson", while best directorial debut went to Daniel Sanchez Arevalo of Spain for "Darkbluealmostblack."

The award for best screenplay was won by Beatrix Christian for the Australian movie "Jindabyne," while the best cinematography nod went to Anthony Dod Mantle of Britain for "The Last King of Scotland."

US family road comedy "Little Miss Sunshine" by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris took home the festival's Audience Award.

Earlier on Saturday, Swedish director Lasse Hallstroem, known for his movies "What's Eating Gilbert Grape," "The Cider House Rules," "Chocolat" and "Casanova," was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award.

Great news for Maggie! And what a wonderful picture of her - did she attend the ceremony and was this taken there? She looks wonderful.
Hopefully 'Sherrybaby' will make it to the movie theaters here!

  2. No, Penny Lane, this picture of Maggie belongs to the "Sherrybaby" IFC Premiere on 28th August 2006. This film sure is a highlight in her career, close to "Secretary"'s caliber performance.

  4. Unfortunately Maggie was not in Stockholm to receive the award. My guess is she didn't want to fly that far with a newborn baby. The director of Sherrybaby, Laurie Collyier, was here however, so I guess she'll be taking the award back to the States and Maggie. :-)

I have to add that I'm really happy that Ryan Gosling won Best Actor for Half Nelson. He's a very talented actor!

  5. yes, Cina, it would be amazing if someday Maggie shared screen with Ryan in an indie flick, both have a powerful shyness that disarms me!

Simon, maybe Maggie wins in the future a Berlin Bear, and she can initiate a little chic zoo for Ramona, ha!

Apparently it's a bronze version of the Swedish "Dala horse", a famous Swedish symbol from a certain region called Dalarna.

  8. I'm happy for Lasse too. I like his Casanova with Heath. This movie is fantastic because all was filmed in Venice in authentic locations even on San Marco square - it's almost impossible

  9. Yeah, Lasse has made some fine movies; My life as a dog, What's eating Gilbert Grape, Cider House Rules etc. Plus he seems to be such a nice man. :)

  10. I love Cider House Rules - it's fantastic
and I have heard comments made by Lasse about Casanova. I love him, he is great, he said that this time in Venice was the time of his life. Those comments are really useful, I sometimes prefer to watch the movie with those comments made by director
